Who the client is?
From its central warehouse in Heilsbronn, FEGA & Schmitt delivers products to electricians, solar energy specialists and construction sites in its central region (south central Germany) in 24 hours, and in a maximum of 48 hours outside of this region. With around 40,000 items in inventory for the installation sector, as well as cable and test equipment for light installation or data and network technology, the electrical wholesaler, headquartered in Ansbach, is also seen as a partner for the transformation of the energy system in Germany.
What the problem is?
The industry handled more than 16,000 order lines that were processed daily. With the intention of achieving operations that will provide them with greater competitiveness, FEGA & Schmitt expanded its range of small items. However, since space was limited in its central warehouse, processes became chaotic and productivity and certainty seemed unattainable.
For this reason, after an exhaustive analysis, the company decided to look for a space-saving solution that would also guarantee that the orders could be reliably fulfilled for the 24-hour service.
What was the solution?
To meet the needs of FEGA and Schmitt, Kardex Remstar suggested an automatic storage system of almost 30 meters high: the Shuttle XP 500. The electric wholesaler now operates two storage elevators Shuttle XP 500.
The installation consisted of a specially designed storage tower with space for another six Shuttle XP units. By combining five orders to integrate a batch, the operators were able to prepare the orders for the shipment with very little effort and high precision, because both storage elevators collect around 500 orders per day.
Since the solution was implemented, FEGA & Schmitt has been able to add 3,000 additional items to its range of small parts and there are plans to add another 3,000. The addition of six other storage lifts in the coming years will gradually improve the logistics strategy.
