Operation visibility: What software do you need to manage your Distribution Center?

blog 33-2

We know that, in the management of any Distribution Center, the main challenge is to achieve a level of logistical excellence at the peak of the operation: the order fulfillment process.

For this, it is essential to have the appropriate software tools that allow to maintain a timely control of the orders received through the different assortment channels that are handled in the DC (e-commerce, retail, wholesalers, etc.), of the completed orders, those that are still in process, as well as the inventory capacity that is had.

But how do I know which software is ideal for my operation?

Below we describe the 3 software that predominate in the management of Distribution Centers.

  • Warehouse Management System (WMS)

One of the main software that all DC must have is the WMS, since this software is the one that provides complete visibility of all the processes that are managed within it, from receipt to shipment; attending the entry orders, the exit orders and the inventories in process. Thus, the WMS becomes "the great process manager" within DC.

Now, if your operation has some automated processes, it is necessary to implement specialized software in automation control that complements the WMS; for example, a WCS (Warehouse Control System) or a WES (Warehouse Execute System).

  • Warehouse Control System (WCS)

If the number of automatisms installed in your Distribution Center is not many and they still do not have many processes, the WCS is the perfect option for you. Unlike the WMS, the WCS is specially designed to provide speed in matters of immediate decisions by the automatisms, that is, the WCS satisfies the instantaneous needs of the operation by means of intelligent algorithms that allow to decide precisely and efficiently in the key moments.

  • Warehouse Execute System (WES)

However, if your operation has multiple automation installed and with great complexity between the processes, the software you need is the Warehouse Execute System.

His function is to be "the great orchestrator of automatisms", since he is in charge of controlling each and every one of them, as well as part of the non-automated operation so that all processes are interconnected and it is possible to know exactly the timing when certain orders and existing inventory levels are released.

This is how the combination of a WMS to manage the DC in a general way, with a WCS / WES to control and add intelligence to the automation, results in a maximum degree of productivity, visibility and control in the Distribution Center.
