The best storage systems to manage returns

AS_RS We have already talked to you about the problems you will have if you are dealing with return issues. To face this constant problem, today we will talk about an effective automated solution to quickly move the returned items through the process; we are talking about an automated storage and recovery system (AS/RS).

What is the operation of the AS/RS storage system for?

When combined with mounted fixed or radio frequency (RF) scanners for reading bar codes, selection work stations and/or walls, items directed to the automated return processing area after inspection can be quickly identified and operators are guided to the appropriate receptacle indicated by AS/RS.

Because automated systems deliver the receptacle directly to the operator indicating its position, both walk and search time are eliminated, allowing fewer staff to sort and process more returns.

In certain applications, the storage containers in the AS/RS can even be used as direct selection areas. This functionality is enabled by integrated inventory management software that not only tracks the items contained in the machine, but also interacts with the facility’s warehouse management system (WMS) and the enterprise resource planning systems (ERP). This function allows selections to be obtained from the most convenient location (in this case, the return processing area) for an even faster replacement and replenishment of the returned inventory.

In this way, when the AS/RS software recognizes that a predetermined amount of returned inventory has been reached, you can work with the WMS to assign and collate a task for those items. This may include routing to outbound shipping to return it to a supplier or transfer it to a secondary reseller in the market, transportation by conveyor or cart to a stock position within the warehouse or shipment to a claim or disposal service provider.

What are the related factors for selecting an AS/RS system?

Selecting the appropriate AS/RS  for an inverse logistics operation will depend on different factors, such as:

  • The number of incoming returns received per day.
  • The size variability of the returned items.
  • The expected return rate.
