The "online purchase" has become a transaction model by excellence for millions of people around the world, especially in the United States. The profits of this process are millionaire and exceed, by far, the result of the previous year.

Analysts do not expect this trend to diminish soon; rather, the forecast is for a compounded annual growth rate of 10% from 2014 to 2019, which equates to $ 480 billion in online sales. However, with all these excellent results, it is highly probable that there will be returns from the consumers themselves to companies in general. After all, unless a buyer is buying an item already seen elsewhere, e-commerce purchases rely heavily on the images and text that a product describes, whether generated by the online merchant or reviewers who have experienced it.

Realities of reverse logistics in electronic commerce

  • Approximately 33% of all products purchased through electronic commerce channels are
  • Up to 30% of soft goods purchased online, such as clothing and footwear, are
  • The biggest cause in the return of product is due to size
  • Less than 10% of products, such as toys, gifts and household items, are
  • 23% of electronic commerce returns are caused by a selection error (the wrong item or the item quantity is chosen instead of the correct one).
  • 22% of electronic commerce returns are due to the fact that the product does not match its online
  • 20% of electronic commerce returns are due to damaged

Despite the exponential growth of this automated process, retailers have identified that they are in crisis due to product return, a process that they have not been able to process successfully. Reverse logistics is one of the most frequently overlooked elements in the entire operations cycle, putting great pressure on the available space and labor of a facility.

In the next blog we will explain in depth what the reverse logistics is and how it can affect the productivity, certainty and quality in the intralogistics processes of your industry.
