Pick-to-belt.png

The Pick to Belt system involves different technologies, such as: radio frequency, Pick to Voice and belt conveyors jointly working. We want to share with you this success case of Pick to Belt implementation within a renowned health care.

Which were the company’s goals?

This company is focused on health care through paper products and it had three goals to be achieved in short and medium term:

  • Goal 1: Redesign the assortment area.
  • Goal 2: Keep inventory system updated.
  • Goal 3: Growth potential and operative expenses reduction.

What was the company’s initial overview?

At the beginning, it had the following operative information:

  • 10,000 items approximately.
  • 400 SKU´s approximately.
  • 3 shifts per day / 30 workers per shift.

The operators moved around the distribution centers in electric walkie jacks due to long distances between fixed positions. Each operator received the order, then goes to the corresponding position in the jack and then takes the box to shipping area.

In this process, many operators were needed and they did not complete orders successfully during busy times.

What was the solution implemented by GIEICOM?

The following activities were analyzed for the design:

  • Operation analysis.
  • Solution’s conceptual design.
  • Engineering coordination and implementation details.
  • Implementation.

The suggested solution was the implementation of Pick to Belt system with a Shoe sorter for shipping area.

How does this solution works?

The same SKU’s positions were located in the area where the conveyor was installed. Operators are place in both sides of the belt so they can put into it the corresponding boxes according to the instructions of Pick to Voice and radio frequency systems.

This conveyor transport boxes to an intelligent Shoe sorter which classified them to shipping area. At the same time, information of orders already set is provided and new orders and shipping information is intelligently sorted.

What does the company obtained from this?

These are some of the benefits:

  • Total working hours were reduced and one shift was eliminated.
  • 200% productivity increase.
  • Orders shipped per hour/day increased 70%.
  • Ergonomics improvement.
  • Operative expenses were reduced and consequently, the cost per order assorted.
  • 100% inventory control.
  • High reliability because the system makes orders’ assortment very easy regardless the operator.
  • Assortment quality increased dramatically.
  • Information’s is always updated in real time.
