The SmarCart guided vehicles have improved all operations within the Macy’s distribution center located in California, EU. Let’s take a look on how this is how AGV’s improved their operations.
The problem
Macy’s distribution center wanted to improve the way in which products were moved within the 750,000 sq. feet warehouse.
Operators were using tuggers for moving furniture-loaded trolleys (couches, mattresses and chairs) manually towards all input and output. However, this was too risky for both furniture and operators.
The solution
After a detailed analysis, it was determined that SmartCart system was the best solution.
Bill O´Malley, Macy’s Operations’ VP, states: “I love SmartCart because it doesn’t get sick or need a break. It is a very efficient and safe system".
This new system is constituted by 5 SmartCart 300 which are designed to tow a train which consists of up to 8 trolleys connected with each other. Currently, they have 200 retrofitted cars that cab ne towed by SmartCarts; this is an obvious improvement from the previous method.
How this technology works?
SmartCarts are controlled by a computer system. The operator guides the vehicle directly from the computer to the pickup areas.
Once the vehicle is there, the SmartCart leaves the empty train in input areas. It is automatically detached and then it goes to the output area and it is attached to the furniture-loaded train, the operator, then, press a button and the SmartCart continues its route to the next area.
Furniture is unloaded manually. The operators have just a few minutes to unload all products, otherwise, an audible alarm is activated by the SmartCart.
It battery is charged with a floor-level metal panel, this allows vehicle to work all the time. As Michel Beard, Macy’s COO, says: “nobody has to plug it, it is charged by itself”.
